  • Application

    Micropilot FMR10 is a sensor for continuous level measurement for liquids in storage tanks, open basins, pump shafts and canal systems.

    Function

    The Micropilot is a "downward- looking" measuring system, operating based on the time-of-flight method (ToF). It measures the distance from the reference point (process connection) to the product surface. Radar impulses are emitted by an antenna, reflected off the product surface and received again by the radar system.

    Application description
    • Type of liquid: flotation sludge from dairy effluents; 13-15% dry matter.
    • Cylindrical underground tank with conical bottom; tank diameter: 6m, depth: 7m.
    • Measuring range 5m, temperature 12-15ºC, atmospheric pressure.

     

     

    The head of the wastewater treatment plant, Radosław Żyłka, describes the problems with the previous device: "Previously we used an ultrasonic probe. Trouble with it was continuous indication jumps caused by the foam layer that is formed on the surface of the liquid."

    Radar level sensor FMR10 at the Koczergi Bio-Power Plant / DMG sp. z o.o.

    Application description

    • Type of liquid: biomass effluent.
    • Dimensions of the tank: 5.5 x 11 x 5m
    • Measuring range: 4-20mA for 0-100%, tank capacity of about 300m3.
    • Temperature: 20-40ºC, atmospheric pressure.

     

    The situation at Bio-Power Plant is reported by Paweł Dziewulski, who works as the Operator of the Biogas Production Line - Automation Technician.

    "So far we have used an echo sounder, we work with a medium, of which the temperature leads to vapour and mist formation. This vapour and mist from in the tank caused uneven, often abrupt level measurement or its disappearance. The problem also appeared when a layer of floating substrates was forming on the liquid surface - the level measurement was then impossible. We also had an emergency situation - we had filled the tank above the point of echo sounder installation, which was possible because the device had no measuring range adjustment function.

    "The Micropilot FMR10 radar [level sensor] was installed in November [2016]. According to my observations and my colleagues', who operated the sensor, it is characterized by the simplicity of its two-wire electrical connection. Thanks to Bluetooth communication, we were able to connect with the sensor without any need climb on the tank and we parameterized it according to our needs (the previous device was very inconvenient to set up). The best feature of the radar FMR10 is its fast adaptability to the measured levels and to the requirements of the PLC controller without the need of any interference in the program."
